Fall 2019 - New Intern Veronica Barrera Joins the Staff

My name is Veronica Barrera and I began interning here at Shango in September. I grew up in Houston, Texas, but migrated a few hours north to the DFW area about four years ago. I am a senior at the University of Dallas, and will be graduating this May with a Bachelor of Arts in Art with a Concentration in Ceramics. My life-long fascination with archeology and anthropology not only drew me to ceramics due to the medium’s extensive ties with a number of cultures both ancient and modern, but also played a strong role in my attraction to Shango. It has been a wonderful experience to work with such culturally diverse art, especially Pre-Columbian ceramic pieces. I have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to ask John about artwork from a wide variety of cultures and the ins and outs of art appraisal, as well as having the opportunity to slowly make my way through the books in our extensive library. Creating art will be a life-long vocation for me, but I also look forward to developing a career in the art field whether it be through education, museum, gallery, or design work. When I am not at Shango or in the studio, I’m usually spending time with friends and family, listening to informative podcasts (most recently I listened to one about Ötzi the Iceman and another on the interactions between Neanderthals and modern humans), baking, or trying to develop a new craft like embroidery, tapestry weaving, or even felting. I have had a great experience at Shango thus far, and I am looking forward to continuing to work here in the spring!
