This week on March 21, 2019, Phillips will host its design auction titled “Important Design” in London that will consist of fantasy furniture and decorative materials. The sale offers an outstanding collection of works by the important architects and interior designers such as Gio Pointi, Donald Judd, Carlo Mollino, George Nakashimi, Carlo Bugati and many others.
Highlights of the sale include a “Dressing table and stool, 1940s” by Italian designer Gio Ponti, a “Rare ceiling light, model no. 2379/1, circa 1964” by the well-known French decorator Max Ingrand, a “Pair of early ‘Fiorenza’ armchairs, designed for the dining room of Casa F., Milan, circa 1945” by Italian Neo-Rationalist architect Franco Albini, and Gino Sarfatti’s “Ceiling light model no. 2068, circa 1952.”
Phillips’ London 2018 Important Design sale totaled £9.7 million on 152 sold lots — almost double the auction low estimates of £5 million — led by the Diego Giacometti’s “Pair of Arm Chairs” that sold for £429,000.
This year, the sale estimates range from £2 million to £3 million with 146 lots on offer.

1. Top Artists to Watch at Phillips Important Design

The most influential designer of 20th century Gio Pointi is expected to be the top-selling artist of the sale with the highest number of lots offered (19 lots) at the auction. Ponti designed many furniture and designer materials in his career including cabinets, lamps and chairs to ceramics and glassware, and building interiors as well.
Carlo Mollino, an Italian Renaissance artist, ranks at No. 2. Mollino is best known for his tables and chairs that express sensuality rarely articulated so beautifully in furniture design. There are 3 lots on offer by Mollino.
Max Ingrand, a French decorator, will have 9 lots on offer at this sale. He is best known for his glass and stained-glass designs and his ceiling light is a highlight the sale.
2. Top Artworks to Watch (by Estimated Sales in GBP)

The sale is leading with a glass door “Wardrobe,” manufactured by Arredamenti Borsani, with glass panels painted by Lucio Fontana, which is expecting to sell for between £140,000 and £220,000. Carlo Mollino’s furniture “Unique pair of lounge chairs, designed for the living room of the Ada and Cesare Minola House, Turin” comes next with £100,000 to £150,000 estimates. All three lots of Mollino made up the list of top 10 works featured at this sale.
3. Various Price Bands Offered at Important Design sale at Phillips London Important Design
Of the 146 lots on offer at this sale, most are furniture (or 76 lots). As the graph below illustrates, 51 of total lots for sales are expected to sell for below £5,000. There is only one work featuring at this sale estimated for over £100,000.
