My Word Summer 2021
The beginning of the summer we thought it may be possible to go back to business as usual, but it was not to be as the Delta variant surges though many states. So for the moment all bets are off and we may be heading to the same art world environment we suffered through in 2020. But we shall see. It has also been a tragic summer as we lost Bill Fagaly Senior Curator at the New Orleans Museum of Art and also Dan Farrell long time Consulting Producer for Antiques Roadshow. They will both be missed as we have noted in this issue.
We hoped to have interns back in the gallery this fall, but that appears to be a long shot. On a happier note we participated in Santa Fe’s Objects of Art Virtual which is online until August 31st. Be sure to check it out if you have a chance. https://virtualobjectsofartsantafe.com/exhibitors-list/?uid=17
I am presently discussing leaving all my websites, databases, records, library, and some artworks to the Dallas Museum of Art. In the next month all online databases will be accessible at no charge. There will, however, be a requirement to sign in and out. Although I intend to continue to add data to the auction database, I view this now as a historical database with some auction records dating prior to 1970. In my judgment for contemporary research artkhade.com, liveauctioneers, sothebys.com, christies.com, bonhams.com, etc are probably better choices. If you are trying to track a certain object in a collection or at an early auction, my auction database is probably superior even without photos.
In this issue we have done something quite different in featuring the story of Doug Deihl and his digital art. We found the journey from tribal as a collector and expert to an artist working with computers both compelling and relevant for the art world today. Doug Deihl’s artwork is both challenging and visually exciting. Hope you enjoy the segment in this issue.
Finally all the events of this summer sidelined me from the Antiques Roadshow which is taping in August, September, and October. The executive producer, staff, crew, and appraisers have done a phenomenal job in being all to make this season a reality.
