MEXICO CITY.- For centuries, Teotihuacan has been a city of mystery, its monumental pyramids and sprawling urban plan a testament to a civilization that vanished long ago. Now, a new book is aiming to demystify this ancient metropolis, offering a fresh look at its remarkable achievements in science and urban planning in a way that anyone can understand.
The digital book, Astronomy, Architecture, Geometry and Geography in Teotihuacan, is a collection of essays that brings together the latest research from a team of independent scholars. It’s a project born from a simple yet powerful idea: that you don't need to be an archaeologist to appreciate the genius of the "City of the Gods."
"This work was designed for those who have not been trained in astronomy and archaeology but have a curiosity to learn about the scientific achievements," explains Ismael Arturo Montero García, the book's editor.
The book, which will be formally presented on August 13 at the Beatriz de la Fuente Museum of Teotihuacan Murals, features stunning illustrations and an accessible format that guides readers through the city's wonders. Its five chapters explore everything from the city's historical timeline to the sacred symbolism embedded in its landscape.
One essay, for instance, reveals how the city's main pyramids—the Pyramid of the Moon, the Pyramid of the Sun, and The Citadel—were deliberately aligned with celestial bodies. Another chapter offers a new theory on how the nearby Chiconautla Volcano might have been the mythical Chicomóztoc, the "place of the seven caves," a legendary origin site for many peoples of the Central Highlands.
In a world where specialized knowledge can often feel out of reach, this book stands out by building a bridge between cutting-edge research and the curious public.
